Uber rolls out new services for sun-seekers across the Mediterranean

  • Uber app launches on islands across the Med in time for the ultimate summer of travel, with Uber data revealing tourists are already flooding back to European holiday hotspots

  • New dazzling destinations include Sicily, Malta and Santorini

  • Uber Explore product also launching in Madrid, allowing customers to browse and book experiences and restaurants

May 25, 2022:  Uber is preparing for the biggest summer of tourism on record, by launching the Uber app across some of Europe’s most popular sun-soaked destinations. As international travel heats up, Uber will be available for locals and visitors alike throughout the idyllic islands of Sicily, Malta and Santorini, with further launches planned throughout Greek & Spanish islands in the coming months.

New data from Uber reveals that tourists are already flooding back to other European hotspots, with rides from international visitors increasing 131% in Malaga and a staggering 500% in the Algarve this year. In Nice, tourist trips are up 330% as throngs of travellers enjoy a chic seaside getaway in the French Riviera.

So where is the most popular summer destination for the Belgians? Last summer, the most Uber trips were taken in France, followed by Portugal.

In response to the rising demand, riders will now be able to hop around new Mediterranean islands with the Uber ease they rely on at home.  Whether it be world-famous beaches or restaurants that only the locals know about, visiting these spots will be easier than ever.

Uber is also announcing the launch of Uber Explore, a new product within the app that will help customers browse and book experiences while they’re abroad, including dinner reservations, tourist attractions, live events and more. Uber Explore is launching in Madrid this month.  With the “ride there now” functionality, customers can tap a button and easily book a ride with their pre-populated destination. Uber Explore will be rolling out to more major cities in the coming months.

Anabel Diaz, EMEA Rides General Manager, said: ”After a couple of challenging years for travel, the return of tourists to the Mediterranean has been a huge relief for those relying on their trade.  We’re excited to pack our bags and get back on the road as we expand our service to some of Europe’s hottest holiday destinations. Whether you’re looking to kick back and relax, enjoy a new city, or explore the road less travelled, Uber will be on hand to get you from A to B with ease and comfort, as well as inspire your destination once you arrive.”
